Castle Howard became famous all over the world when it starred as Brideshead Castle in Granada TV's 1981 series Brideshead Revisited, starring Jeremy Irons, Anthony Andrews and Diana Quick. Twenty-seven years later, a new generation will see Castle Howard revisiting its role as Brideshead Castle in a new feature film to be released in the autumn of 2008.
For five weeks in the summer of 2007, Castle Howard played host to a crew from Ecosse Films, who were making a new film of Brideshead Revisited based on the novel by Evelyn Waugh. The film features Michael Gambon and Emma Thompson as Lord and Lady Marchmain, and Matthew Goode as Charles Ryder, Ben Whishaw as Sebastian Flyte, and Hayley Atwell as Julia Flyte.
On 1 June 2008 Castle Howard will be opening once-ruined rooms in the High South used as sets in the film, and now featuring an exhibition on the new film. These High South rooms were damaged in fire of 1940, and their ruinous state meant they could be used to construct sets for the film.
Visitors will be able to see the sets constructed in the shell of the High Saloon, with fabulous views over the gardens, and a unique viewpoint up to the Dome and down to the Great Hall. Visitors will be able to see damage from the 1940 fire, sets constructed for the new film and exhibitions on new and old productions of Brideshead Revisited filmed at Castle Howard.
